Since the 16th century there were no big changes to the building itself, only the tower is from the modern era. Because of some fires they had to rebuild the tower several times. When the city was almost completely destroyed in the fire of 1827, the Cathedral was also affected. The tower is now 85.53m high, including the cross which is 3.40m high.
The in Middle Ages builed smallerside chapels were converted during the reformation to the dead vaults. Many important personalities of Finnish history (mostly bishops and warlords) are buried here.
In the year1980, a new, equipped with 75 registers pipe-organ was installed, which comes from the Finnish pipe-organ-builder Veikko Virtanen, who had also built the pipe-organ of Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki.
